We are possessed by our possessions via money that possesses us because we know no better, see no better way. We are indeed possessed by evil spirits (that possess the rich and powerful far more totally than they possess us) and, alas, hardly aware of it.
By contrast, and I am so grateful that you mention this, in the old cultures people were 'owned' by the land at least as much as they 'owned' it. Is it any coincidence that those cultures had a keen sense of spirit possession as a very real thing, for which they had all sorts of rituals and protective objects and words.
