I don't know what happened at the University of Illinois but I do know that it's common for people to let us down and this is one major thing that ails society. In all the studies people do, we still don't know how to support each other and give each other strength and encouragement. We're so overwhelmed with just so much being wrong. I hope you find some satisfaction in this case Emanuel.

Wow. Communications possibly interrupted? I hear respect for you and I also hear fear for themselves finding excuse for cowardice. But judgement isn't for us in the end. The world some of them are still counting on functioning is rapidly changing now and became dysfunctional long ago so they are buying only a short amount of time at a great price.

I realize your book Wrestling with Shadows has been out for awhile but it is the first time I was made aware of it and have finished reading it. So many of the things you describe I can relate to as a Targeted Individual. It is nice to know that someone else finds the things they do to harass you as amusing at times and the extent the will go to. My final comment is - imagine a world where people were not afraid to speak out about the egregious acts done to others. I believe that this would stop if everyone would speak out. What are they going to do jail us all for telling the truth?

The people harassing me were not my enemies, and at times it was humorous, even a bit of an inside joke. It depended entirely on the chain of command. But when I was thrown out of the US in 2020 again, it was brutal and it would eventually lead to my wife's death. There is a tiny handful of people who are not afraid, and in most cases they do not get in trouble. But our culture breeds cowardice. Most anyone who receives a letter with Homeland SEcurity letterhead that says keep a distance from this individual of interest will follow the letter to the word even though it is not legally binding in any sense. I encourage you to try to run for office. It was most definitely worth the effort.

Emanuel, your persistence in the face of such adversity so admirable and an attestation to your character... I will keep posting as long as there are things to say as I am reading Wresting with Shadows.. Others, please read his book and comment as well.

We keep trying. I feel that dishonesty about what happened to the US after the 2000 election, more than me, is the biggest problem we have. Everything became taboo

I’ve read up to it page 85 of his story. Looks like the long distance learning idea in 2000 was a great idea and was compatible with the then idealistic optimism when the internet was open. It seems Emanuel was caught up in the beginning of the lockdown and control of information on the internet we are now experiencing. Ideally academics exchanging knowledge world wide would be a benefit to all humans, except those who profit and get their rocks off causing discontent. He was up against the already established intelligence agencies who make a living keeping and finding out secrets. With all the cyber security shenanigans going on, imagine if the internet was really open like it use to be in the late 90’s…They weren’t having it!

President Kennedy wanted to share space science with Russia and look what happened to him.

Do appreciate your taking the time to read. Actually the story was widely known but an incredible number of people agreed to just pretend it never happened.

Why of course, similar to the Covid debacle. “We don’t wanna go there”…that phrase sends chills up my spine whenever I see or hear it. That’s exactly when discussion and dialogue need to occur.

Emmanuel, I like the last letter by Mark cause he’s showing sympathy to your situation. Almost heart to heart. He is also giving direct advice. This is not what you wanted, but it’s practical advice. Now, for this many people (all of them) to not want to help you - an esteemed colleague - is puzzling. I hate to say this, but have ever considered that you might be a targeted individual?

That I was a targeted individual from August of 2000.is obvious. In my book I even reconstruct what that letter must have said, the classified advisory. At the same time the special status also protected me. All the responses I shared were from people who actually cared enough to answer and to try to do something to help, if not very much. But they were wrong to assume that the passage of time, or going to Korea, would solve my problems, our problems. By the end I felt that running for president was literally the only solution

I am sorry to hear of your mistreatment, but I'm frustrated by not knowing the details. Can anyone direct me to an article detailing the events at the University of Illinois? Thanks in advance and I hope that Mr. Pastreich can find some satisfactory resolution to the case.

Peter, glad to hear your kind response. If you are interested in the story (from my point of view) see Wrestling with Shadows. https://circlesandsquares.asia/2021/05/17/wrestling-with-shadows-a-novel-by-emanuel-pastreich/ I would love to have it corrected and supplemented with the opinions of others involved, but sadly no one has come forward to offer a different version. There have been texts that can be interpreted as references to my case, but they are not explicit.

There was an article published in July, 2000 (which is cited in Wrestling with Shadows) that refers to the debate on my proposal at University of Illinois at the time. The article has since been deleted.

The most interesting question is how the movie "A Beautiful Mind" is related to my case. There are a few sections that seem to be a direct reference to my case. But the movie can also be interpreted as a general reference to a much larger group of intellectuals in the US who were subject to classified programs after December 2000 to suppress their voices criticizing the totalitarian rule at the time.

But then there is the larger question of the original story of John Nash. One can see the movie as taking the story of John Nash's real mental illness as an analogy for the real gaslighting carried out against those opposing the totalitarian government set up in December of 2000.

But was John Nash really crazy? He was a rival with the other master of game theory John von Neumann who argued for mutually assured destruction and helped justify the massive build up of nuclear weapons under the Strategic Command. He made billions of dollars for certain industrialists. Nash's theories of coexistance and mutual benefit in game theory were a direct threat to von Neumann's theories and a threat to the military industrial complex. There is evidence, I am told, that Nash was not really crazy either, but was destroyed because his intellect was too threatening.

Thank you very much and, although I anticipate the story will detail injustices, I look forward to learning of it. Grateful for you response and assistance.

I am reading Wresting with Shadows and the persistent theme I hear is that family and friends seem to think that it was your fault that you were struggling to find employment instead of directing that energy to hearing your truth and then doing something to publicly getting your story out to the injustices that were done to you and are being done to many others. I just do not understand that thinking of it is not happening to me then I do not want to talk about it or risk standing up against something that is so wrong.
