My field is Japanese literature. I think that what shook me out of the mould for a professor, an intellectual, was a bout with serious illness. I had to take some real risks. I discovered that the entire world of experts are cowards of the worst kind. Thank you for the thoughtful note

I agree with everything you said. I didn't receive an "elite" Ivy League education. Instead, I studied the cello at Juilliard during the late 70's and remained resolutely apolitical until 9/11. Since then, I woke up to the myriad and pervasive fraud disgustingly evident throughout our society; however, the COVID scam really drove home for me the realization of the cowardice and seeming moral blindless of most people. I've found my most educated friends to be the least discerning about these matters. Perhaps, because of their relatively higher position in the social hierarchy, they identify and/or derive social prestige this way. You are a very accomplished person and your Japanese seems to be quite excellent (I have a Japanese wife). good luck!
