As you know, President Wilson set up a large group of spies, some government agents and some paramilitary, who currycombed the country looking for anyone who were Kaiser-stooges and opposed his warmongering. Debs ended up in prison for a number of years, like thousands of others who opposed Wilson's war, convicted under the Sedition Act. Many others were just beaten up, fired from their jobs, and ostracized by the mainstream media, universities, business, and other institutions of that time. As the Frenchman Alphonse Karr said, "Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose". "The more things change, the more they stay the same". Debs, and the others, were not freed until the Republicans took back the White House and Congress in 1920.
