The right is generally scientifically illiterate, and the Global Warming issue highlights the right’s delusions. The basics of Global Warming are easy to understand and hinge on the phenomenon of how electrons absorb and emit photons. That is how Earth warms up in daytime (and cools off at night) and how photosynthesis works. People only need to know the bare rudiments of quantum theory to understand that only photons with “compatible” energy levels will be absorbed by certain electrons.
Water and carbon dioxide are the two most important atmospheric gases that capture infrared radiation that is released by electrons on Earth’s surface on its way back out to space. The mechanism of capture is photons at a certain wavelength, which reflect how much energy they have – the greater the energy, the shorter the wavelength and the higher the frequency – are absorbed by electrons that can use the energy provided at that wavelength, to temporarily boost them into higher orbits.
When those captured infrared photons are subsequently emitted by those water and carbon dioxide molecules, the direction is random but enough of them aim back at Earth to create what is called “radiative forcing.” That is going to warm up Earth and that is the basic dynamic of Global Warming. There is far more water in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, but water only stays in the atmosphere for a week while carbon dioxide stays for a century.
Carbon dioxide levels are a key variable in determining Earth’s surface temperature. In ways, carbon dioxide is more important than water in determining Earth’s surface temperature, largely because of its low boiling point compared to water. Earth would likely be a ball of ice if not for carbon dioxide. Without the carbon dioxide from volcanism, Earth would have likely never escaped its first Snowball Earth episode.
